Henny Penny: A store you can rely on

WINSTED — A Henny Penny convenience store opened on Friday, May 25, on New Hartford Road.

The Henny Penny chain is owned by Hendels Inc. of Waterford. According to company president John Engle, the Winsted Henny Penny is the only one of the company’s 19 stores that is located in the northern part of the state.

“We chose Winsted for our newest location because we wanted to make our presence known here,” Engle said in an interview.

“It’s not easy to find big pieces of land where you can build a location like this. We chose Winsted because it had large pieces of land where we could build this store in a high-traffic area. I also think that the town is awesome. I’ve been around Highland Lake and I think it’s very nice.”

The store employs 15 people and has four gas pumps, which offer both high-speed and regular pumps for diesel fuel.

It also offers fresh food including pizza, chicken sandwiches and egg sandwiches.

“We offer products that are not microwaved but cooked in conventional ovens,” Engle said. “We are offering a full breakfast and lunch selection.”

The store has 13 coolers stocked with sodas, energy drinks and food items.

“We are offering all of these products and services in order to take care of the community,” he said. “We also installed an electric generator at the store. It was a big investment to install it, but if the power goes out in a storm we will continue to be up and running.

“It took a long time to construct the building,” Engle said. “We want the store to be very shoppable and welcoming. We will be a store that you can rely on.”

The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Food is sold from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
