Highlanders Fall to Lewis Mills, 61-56

The Northwestern boys basketball team came up with an outstanding effort before eventually falling to Lewis Mills Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Northwestern Gym.

The Highlanders played on even terms with the Spartans the entire game and actually held a 54-50 lead with just under three minutes to go but it just wasn’t to be on this night.

Lewis Mills (9-3) came into the game off a huge road win over Litchfield on Saturday, knocking the Cowboys out of a first-place tie with Gilbert in the Berkshire League. What the Spartans may have forgotten, however, was that the Highlanders held a fourth-period lead against them on their home court earlier in the year, which certainly gave them plenty of confidence coming into Tuesday night’s game.

The two teams knocked heads in the first quarter, ending with the score tied at 13. The second period was more of the same, but the Spartans managed to pull away and head into the locker room with a 31-25 lead.

The third period was no different as both teams went at each other and when the horn sounded, the Highlanders had cut the lead by one, 46-41. Northwestern’s determined third-period effort gave the team some momentum as the Highlanders headed into the fourth quarter.

The Highlanders picked up the intensity and managed to fight their way back and eventually take the lead with less than three minutes left. Lewis Mills refused to buckle under and picked up their defensive intensity, which proved to be the difference.

Senior guard John Griffey scored a game-high 16 points, including 14 in the second half, while fellow seniors Josh Seibold and Tyler Height added 12 points each.

To their credit, Housatonic continued to play well in the third period, which ended with the Mountaineers still within striking distance, 51-43.

The Jackets finally took control of the game as they went on a 16-5 run in the fourth period to secure what was a hard-earned win.
