HLWA holds benefit tag sale

WINSTED — Weather conditions were favorable for the Highland Lake Watershed Association’s (HLWA) seventh annual tag sale on Saturday, May 17, at Resha Beach. The tag sale featured an array of items, from toys, books and household goods to sporting equipment and collectables. “The weather is an important part of the event,” board member Jean Labic said. “We had plans to hold it inside the Parks and Rec building if it rained, but we’re happy with the nice weather. The event was very well attended.”Labich said most of the items were donated from HLWA members, including decorative tiles and ornaments depicting seasonal images of Highland Lake.According to organizer Dick Labich, the annual tag sale is one of two fundraising events held by the association each year. “We also have a wine-tasting event which we hold on the lake, and this year it will be held on August 23,” Labich said. “The money raised by the tag sale and party funds services like water quality testing and herbicide treatments, including the hiring of engineers, contractors and limnologists.”At press time, Labich said the organization was still counting how much was raised at the event. The HLWA has existed for over 50 years, with the goal of preserving and protecting the lake for future generations. Membership is open to those who reside within the watershed and anyone who is environmentally concerned and would like to be part of the effort.
