Home ownership support in the Harlem Valley

The Harlem Valley is fortunate to have a new neighbor in Hudson River Housing, which has just opened its newest satellite office at the North East Community Center (NECC) on South Center Street in Millerton. The office is home to the NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County, which will serve the northeastern part of the county. The agency offers information and training about owning a home, being a landlord and taking advantage of various residential opportunities. It also offers credit counseling and budgeting advice. Its goal is to help people obtain or maintain a home in today’s challenging economy. The services Hudson River Housing will provide through its new Millerton office promise to be invaluable to those seeking any number of homeownership opportunities. The agency has a history of providing homeless housing and prevention to post-purchase counseling for homeowners, much to its credit. When it began the NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County in 2007, its focus expanded to helping homebuyers and homeowners through education and assistance, with valuable insight on how to protect their investments. In the agency’s own words, here’s how it works: “Through the collaboration of residents and business leaders, government and nonprofit partners, the NeighborWorks Home-Ownership Center offers all of the services and training needed to shop for, purchase, rehabilitate, insure, maintain and manage a home.”Not bad. In fact, it’s pretty useful, and if the center is made use of the way it’s intended, it can be an instrumental tool in the homebuying experience. There are NeighborWorks organizations all around the country, and Hudson River Housing has been a chartered member with NeighborWorks for more than a decade. It held an open house on Thursday, June 9, to introduce itself to the Harlem Valley community. The agency also invites folks to stop by during hours of operation and get familiar with the services it offers. The new office is located at 51 South Center St., Millerton; call 845-454-9288.We’re looking forward to the services the new NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County office will be able to provide to the region. We’re hoping its presence will be appreciated and that the community will do its best to make the agency feel right at home.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”
