Hospital history comes alive at Sharon Historical Society show

SHARON — The Sharon Historical Society opened its “At the Center of Caring†exhibit, which chronicles the history of Sharon Hospital, on Friday, May 7, with a reception attended by members of the hospital community past and present.

The exhibit includes photos and artifacts from the hospital’s 101-year history, including equipment, paraphernalia and even a nurse’s uniform that is decades old.

Charlie Therrien, president and CEO of Sharon Hospital, said at the opening reception that the exhibit has a complete chronology of changes at the hospital, including staff, technology and even the hospital building, which has expanded and changed over the years.

“Over time, the town’s and the hospital’s histories have been symbiotic,†Therrien said. “The hospital is a major part of the community.â€

It was a trip down memory lane for Dr. Peter Reyelt, who has worked at the hospital as a surgeon for more than 44 years.

When he walked through the exhibit on Friday, he pointed out former hospital workers he knew in many of the pictures on display —and shared stories about some of them.

“When I first started there, no other hospital in the area had the technology and the space we had,†Reyelt said. “Over time, the hospital has continued to improve its technology and facilities.â€

The exhibit will be on display until Wednesday, June 9.

The Sharon Historical Society is located 18 Main St. and is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
