Housatonic High principal, staff respond to accreditation report

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School Principal Gretchen Foster responded this week to some of the recommendations of the recent accreditation report from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

In a five-minute update to the Region One Board of Education at its regular meeting Monday night, Foster said “department chairs are already addressing the recommendation that the school provide written curriculum guides for all courses and departments.

Also in response to the association’s report, administrators have become even more active in the area of faculty evaluation. Foster said she is currently evaluating 15 teachers, Assistant Principal Maryann Buchanan eight and department heads between four and five.

Released last month, the 61-page report from the regional accrediting organization also questioned whether Foster had sufficient authority, faulted the school for an unclear chain of command and cited an alleged lack of school spirit. Foster said she is working on a document that will clarify the lines of authority.

“I know I have the autonomy to lead the school, Foster said. “It’s essential that everyone have a role in the decision-making process.

As for the school spirit issue, Foster said the opening of school last week was the best she has seen in her three years at Housatonic. At an assembly last week, “you could hear a pin drop in that auditorium, she said.

The board asked no questions about the report after Foster’s brief comments.

In other business:

• The board voted unanimously to extend to June 2008 the contract of Regional Athletic Director Craig Toensing.

• Foster said history teacher Peter Vermilyea has been named Housatonic’s teacher of the year. He will now move on to a state competition for the same honors.

• Region One Superintendent Patricia Chamberlain said the high school’s enrollment stands at 564, down from 567 last year. This year’s enrollments do not become official until Oct. 1.

“We’re close to what we projected in terms of holding our numbers, Chamberlain said.

• The board unanimously appointed the following athletic coaches for the fall season:

• Assistant football coaches Steve Kelleher ($3,137.76); Doug Richardson ($3,137.76); Adam Bunce ($1,370.88)

• Girls soccer assistant coach Vinnie Viscariello ($2,722.30)

• Varsity field hockey coach Steve Magyar ($2,306.50)

The JV field hockey coach recently resigned and a replacement has yet to be found, athletic director David Bayersdorfer said.
