Housatonic student of the week

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — This week’s student of the week at Housatonic Valley Regional High School could also appear under the dictionary definition of “soft-spoken.” A bright, quiet girl with a penchant for Jane Austen, Katie Orrell, a senior, possesses one of the most lovely and delicate soprano voices in the choir, though one might not hear it outside of a concert. Onstage, however, Katie blossoms, shedding her outward timidity and embracing her inner melody when she performs with our Night Choir, chorus or band. Indeed, her poise before an audience earned her the Visual and Performing Arts Award this year.Katie experienced a formative moment in her musical career this past December when she performed a trombone solo in the Winter Concert, and her music instruction has played such a significant role in giving her a voice that she intends to pursue a career as a music teacher. According to her, music gives students a form of expression, promotes individuality and demonstrates to students that “everybody’s voice matters.” She has already been accepted to Hartwick College and is awaiting her audition for the Music Education program there.
