Housy football opener Sept. 16

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) Mountaineers football team begins its 2011season this Friday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m. under the lights at HVRHS field against Windsor-Locks.The Mountaineers boast a seasoned squad of juniors and seniors, many of whom have been playing varsity ball for three years, backed up by a very promising group of underclassmen. Donyell Williams, Jake Sutterlin, Will Perotti, Tyler Dean, Forrest Hayden, Adam Vernali and captain Jake Foley each begin their final year with a thorough knowledge of head coach Deron Bayer’s version of the single-wing formation, first introduced in 2007.Wamogo High School, which co-ops with Housy in football, has always provided the Mountaineers with a critical dose of talent and this year is no exception; captain Matt McElhone, Marc Wildmon and Doug Wipple round out the starting lineup.The Mountaineers have performed very well in four pre-season scrimmages, moving the ball well by hard running and adjusting quickly to all the defensive fronts they’ve faced. The Housy defense was an impenetrable wall both on the line and in the backfield.This is the first of two home games under the lights at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. The Mountaineers will face Stafford the following Friday, Sept. 23, again at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
