Housy hosts Blue and Gold camps

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School will host a series of Blue and Gold Athletic Camps for students who will be entering grades five through nine in the fall of 2011.“Our camps are designed to introduce young athletes to the skills necessary to successfully compete in basketball, football and wrestling,” said Dan Carroll, athletic director at Housy.Carroll said the Blue and Gold camps are the most affordable in the area. While similar programs charge $125 to $200 per camp, Housy charges $100. For students who attend more than one camp, additional camps are $50. Also, families with more than one child in camp will pay $50 per additional child.In addition to the specific sport training, exercises and drills will be covered that can be done year round at home in preparation for almost any sport.This year’s Blue and Gold programs are girls basketball, June 27 to July 1; boys basketball July 4 to July 8; football July 11 to July 15; and wrestling July 25 to July 29. Each camp will be administered by HVRHS’s head coach of that sport: girls basketball by Parker Strong; boys basketball by Dave Battistoni; football by Deron Bayer; and wrestling by Tom Medonis.For more information and to request an application, call 860-824-5123, ext 190.

From research to recognition: Student project honors pioneering Black landowner

Cornwall Consolidated School seventh graders Skylar Brown, Izabella Coppola, Halley Villa, Willow Berry, Claire Barbosa, Willa Lesch, Vivianne DiRocco and Franco Aburto presented a group research project on the life of Naomi Freeman Wednesday, April 23. In attendance were U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., John Mills, president of Alex Breanne Corporation, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, Cornwall Selectman Jennifer Markow and CCS social studies teacher Will Vincent.

CORNWALL — “In Cornwall you have made the decision that everyone here matters and everyone’s story is important,” said U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Waterbury, to the seventh grade class at Cornwall Consolidated School April 23.

Hayes was in attendance to celebrate history on Wednesday as the CCS students presented their group research project on the life of Naomi Cain Freeman, the first Black female landowner in Cornwall.
