Ice cream on an icy day at Salisbury Central School

LAKEVILLE — Chef Russ Sawicki of the Wandering Moose Cafe in West Cornwall showed a group of pre-kindergarten and second-grade students how to make ice cream Monday afternoon, Jan. 23, at Salisbury Central School. The group made chocolate and vanilla, and Sawicki wisely brought some premade samples along so the students didn’t have to wait the 30 minutes or so.Explaining the ingredients, Sawicki, looking for the answer “cream,” asked what the kids thought went into ice cream. “Any of you have raw milk at home? What happens when you let it sit?”One child piped up, “It gets disgusting and cheesy.” Needless to say, the ice cream the children created was neither of those things. It was delightful and delicious.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
