Ice cream social draws 100 seniors

WINSTED — The Blanche McCarthy Senior Center, located at 80 Holabird Ave., held its annual ice cream social on Thursday, Aug. 4. More than 100 seniors attended the event, where they were all treated to ice cream, food, punch and entertainment from musician Joe Blumert of Salisbury. “This is the one time of the year where people can forget about the calories they’re eating,” senior center Director Ellen Schroeder said. “It gets people out of the house and gets them to be social. This is usually our most popular event. We usually sell out of tickets.”Friends Norma Jarvis and Ann Brochu of Winsted, along with Bernice Colwell of Norfolk, were among the many seniors at the event. “It’s very nice and it gives us something to do,” Brochu said. “The senior center is a nice place and everyone is so friendly.”Diana Neshko of Winsted volunteers at the center and said she enjoys it. “I volunteer here five days a week and I think it’s a great place,” Neshko said. “There is great comradery here and great people.”
