Ice skating one way to keep cool in summer

Every summer while my friends were swimming at the beach, I’d be spinning, jumping, sweating and flying in the cool sanctuary that kept me an other-worldly pale: the ice rink at the International Skating Center of Connecticut (ISCC) in Simsbury. I was dancing on knives, defying gravity and friction. Of course I fell a lot, too, garnering bruises on my hands and hips, a swollen elbow the size of a tennis ball, a sprained ankle, a concussion. Battle wounds. My parents, and other skaters’ parents, would sit in the bleachers at the top (where the heat rises to) sweatshirts draped over their legs, hot coffee held tight in their hands. ISCC has hosted a summer skating school for the past 16 years. The program, which runs from June 12 to Aug. 15, exposes skaters of all levels to different on- and off-ice training. A new addition to the program is Dartfish, a video analysis that includes frame-by-frame technology. “We are very excited about it,” said Laura Smith, director of marketing and corporate sponsorship at ISCC. “I have been searching for the right person to come to camp for years and this technician really understands our customer base, the needs of our skaters and the way we approach the summer school experience.” Many world-class coaches give private lessons here as well, including former Junior World champion Vladimir Petrenko, 1994 World Pair champions and former Olympic team members (also my coaches) Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova and many other experienced professionals. Some of the top skaters in the world have used the Simsbury rink as their home ice, including Alexei Yagudin and Sasha Cohen, both coached at that time by Tatiana Tarasova.Students come from all over the country and world to train here. Smith said this summer there are some students from Hawaii, Mexico, Canada and England. It’s a cultural experience, as much as an athletic one, and it gave me experiences and summers that I will never forget. To learn more about the summer and winter programs at ISCC (including adult open skates), email Laura Smith at laurasmith@isccskate.com, call the rink at 860-651-5400 or go to www.isccskate.com.Gwendolyn Craig, a 2011 Lakeville Journal intern, is a student at the University of Connecticut and a former competitive skater.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
