It's all under the bridge at gallery show in West Cornwall

CORNWALL — Jazz on the porch, pizza, champagne and terrific art made for a perfect afternoon in West Cornwall Sunday, when Lady Audrey’s Gallery hosted a reception for a judged competition called Bridges.

Artists were encouraged to be broad in their interpretations — and they did not disappoint. Among the 31 entries were paintings, photographs and mixed media that found diversity in a variety of subjects and style.

Salisbury artist Frances (Sawtelle) Miller submitted two paintings she did in the 1950s, when she was 14 and 15, winning honorable mention for her Impressionist style and the beautiful light she brings to her paintings.

Cornwall photographer Harry Colley not only earned an honorable mention, he had also sold three of his four prints midway through the reception. One image shows the Covered Bridge before its latest renovation.

“They had about a quarter of it painted a bright red when I called the state and stalled them until the order came down to paint it the same dark red it was before, Colley said.

A wooden model of the Covered Bridge by Cornwall artist Richard Griggs, entitled “Gnats Crossing, was covered with swirling silver wire holding tiny balls, representing, of course, Cornwall’s famous gnats. It won an Award of Merit.

Reception-goers expressed their delight with the tiny gallery under the Wish House, and something owner Deborah Kendig has dubbed a “quadreasel.

A special feature was a collection of bridge drawings by Cornwall Consolidated School students done in 1994. Todd Piker supplied the drawings he saved after doing a talk on bridge construction for Mrs. Budge’s, and his daughter’s,  fourth-grade class.

Best of Show  went to “Walking the Brooklyn Bridge,â€ an oil on canvas by Merrill French of Harwinton. Second place went to “Elements of North Nine,â€ an acrylic on canvas by Phil Moncuse of Morris. Third place was awarded to Case Jenkins, an art teacher at Salisbury School, for “Ponte Vecchio,â€ an untitled oil on canvas.

In addition to Harry Colley and Frances Miller, Awards of Merit went to Morrow Jones of New Hartford; Hendon Chubb of West Cornwall; and Claire Marcus of Bethlehem, Pa.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
