Jack Brown Fair Sunday August 1 in East Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — The annual Jack Brown 4H Fair is always a good time — sort of a country fair on a neighborhood scale.

Last Sunday’s, held as usual in the North Canaan Congregational Church parking lot on Lower Road, was most notable for its rather large number of participants. The North Canaan-based Busy Farmers 4H Club has attracted a lot of new members, and their assorted livestock.

A large contingent came from the River Valley 4H Club base in Ashley Falls. The group was well-organized and sported new blue club T-shirts.

While Holsteins, Jerseys and Swiss cows and the dairy cow competition dominated, chickens, rabbits, goats and dogs were also proudly displayed by their young owners.

None of these items were more than ten years old. I credit Rachel Wolfe of The Wall Street Journal for explaining why.
