Jackets and Highlanders golf share Berkshire League championship

The Gilbert and Northwestern golf teams both came home smiling from Tuesday’s Berkshire League Golf Championships. The two local high schools, along with Nonnewaug, posted identical team scores of 341 to earn a share of the conference team championship.

Gilbert’s Adam Vaccari captured individual honors for the second consecutive year, shooting a 1-under par round of 71. Jim Bunel also played well for Gilbert with a round of 80, while teammates Phil Davey and Mike Lejeune chipped in with rounds of 91 and 99, respectively.

Northwestern was without two regulars for the tournament but showed depth by earning a share of the tournament championship to go along with the regular season championship, which the Highlanders won outright.

For the Highlanders, Vinny Gangi led the way with a round of 83, followed by Nick Bardino and Phil Smith, with rounds of 86, and Chris Cartelli, who shot 87.

Jackets win state opener

The Gilbert boys baseball team upset Notre-Dame Fairfield, 7-5, Tuesday, May 27, in Fairfield in the first round of the CIAC Class S state tournament.

The Jackets entered the game ranked 22 with a record of 9-11, while Notre Dame was ranked 13th on the strength of a 13-7 regular-season mark.

Gilbert jumped out to an early lead by scoring five runs in the first inning. The Jackets would add additional runs in the next two innings and were leading 7-3 before Notre Dame scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to draw to within two, 7-5.

The Jackets’ Zac Tuozzo then took the mound in relief and held the Lancers scoreless during the final two innings. Nate Lapointe had a big day for the Jackets, going two for four with three runs batted in, while Jon Tessman knocked in two with a double. Tuozzo also contributed an RBI single.
