Joseph ‘Joey’ Damien Sexton

TORRINGTON — Joseph “Joey” Damien Sexton passed away on Jan. 10, 2019, at Hartford Hospital. He was 57 years old.

He was born in Greenwich, Conn., on Jan. 19, 1961. He attended Salisbury Central School and Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

Joey endured many obstacles in his short life. He was involved in a motorcycle accident at the age of 23 that left him paralyzed. Where some people might have given up, Joey did not. He went on to work for 25 of the last 35 years at Lakeville Lake and ITW in Lakeville. He built a motorcycle later in life, which with the aid of a side car, he was able to ride and enjoy like in days gone by.

Joey’s true passion was his music. He was an avid guitar player and song writer. With his band, The Joey Sexton Band, of which he was the lead guitar and vocal, he produced three albums. The band played many local venues in the area and surrounding towns and was a staple at the Still-River Music Festival in Riverton, Conn., in the last couple of years. One of his proudest moments was playing at a place called The Bitter End in New York City. The band had planned to play again but sadly had to cancel, due to Joey’s illness.

Joey will be missed but his spirit, music, and lasting impression on people will go on.

Joey was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Sexton. He is survived by his many cousins, his loving and loyal friends and his best buddy, Ziggy the Cat.

There will be a celebration of Joey’s life on Saturday, Feb.  9, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Couch Pipa VFW on Route 7 South in North Canaan.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Judge throws out zoning challenge tied to Wake Robin Inn expansion

A judge recently dismissed one lawsuit tied to the proposed redevelopment, but a separate court appeal of the project’s approval is still pending.

LAKEVILLE — A Connecticut Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against Salisbury’s Planning and Zoning Commission challenging a zoning amendment tied to the controversial expansion of the Wake Robin Inn.

The case focused on a 2024 zoning regulation adopted by the P&Z that allows hotel development in the Rural Residential 1 zone, where the historic Wake Robin Inn is located. That amendment provided the legal basis for the commission’s approval of the project in October 2025; had the lawsuit succeeded, the redevelopment would have been halted.

A winter visit to Olana

Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home created by 19th-century Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, rises above the Hudson River on a clear winter afternoon.

By Brian Gersten

On a recent mid-January afternoon, with the clouds parted and the snow momentarily cleared, I pointed my car northwest toward Hudson with a simple goal: to get out of the house and see something beautiful.

My destination was the Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home of 19th-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church. What I found there was not just a welcome winter outing, but a reminder that beauty — expansive, restorative beauty — does not hibernate.
