Kent resident wins Porsche

KENT — The Kent Memorial Library (KML) had planned to choose the winner of its annual fundraising raffle on Oct. 30. But, like so many other events scheduled for the end of October this year, the drawing had to be postponed because of the snowstorm and power outage.By Saturday, Nov. 5, things were clearing up a little and the winner could be selected. Kent resident Rudy Molho was chairperson of this year’s raffle. Kent residents Carter Norland, age 6 and a half, and his sister, Katrina, 5, selected the 2011 raffle winners.Kent resident Mark Miller, a policeman, took home the 2000 Porsche Boxster sports car. Sam Wee of Cornwall Bridge won the 42-inch flat-screen television. Meredith Vass of New York City won the iPad. Laura McLaughlin, the library’s director, said the raffle helps the independent library raise 70 percent of its budget.Miller, reached by telephone the day after the drawing, said, “I’m still pinching myself that we won the car.”Miller and his family have lived in Kent for about 25 years. He is an officer with the Brookfield police department. His wife, Christine, is a corporate flight attendant. Their two grown children are graduates of Housatonic Valley Regional High School and now have careers of their own.“We buy library raffle tickets every year,” Miller said. “It’s one way we support the library. My wife and I are extremely thankful for the excellent education our children received in Region One and the library was an important part of that.”After working the midnight shift, Miller was taking a nap Saturday morning when his wife received a telephone call from Molho saying they had won the Porsche. When his wife woke him up and told him, Miller said, “I told her to stop pulling my leg.” And he went back to sleep. She persisted until he woke up and finally believed her.“What could be better,” Miller said. “We support our library and win a sports car in the bargain.” Miller said he is giving the car to his wife as an anniversary present; their anniversary was, appropriately, Oct. 30, the original date of the drawing. The Porsche has been delivered. As soon as it is registered, the Millers plan to take it for a drive.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
