Labor Day tickets on the Taconic

MILLBROOK — On Labor Day, New York State Police from Troop K spent the afternoon handing out speeding tickets to drivers on the Taconic Parkway exceeding the 55 mph posted speed limit.

On Monday afternoon, a total of 81 traffic tickets, including 62 for speeding, were issued in the town of Clinton alone, with a female driver from Brooklyn clocking in the highest speed of 95 mph.

“There were no accidents on the Dutchess County portion of the Taconic State Parkway on Labor Day due to the stepped up enforcement, said Sgt. Joseph Lutz of the state police barracks in Millbrook.

The winding, hilly Taconic, with its low 55 mph speed limit, is ideal for radar or laser speed traps that are not easily detected by drivers.

The towns of Clinton and Stanford are well known for enforcing the speed limit.

Lutz debunked the claim that some towns pay for troopers to increase speeding ticket revenue.

“We patrol the town on our own and spread the wealth evenly to the towns we cover, he said.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
