LAKEVILLE, Conn. — The Lakeville Journal Company, which has been at its current 33 Bissell St. address since 1982 and in Lakeville since 1897, is in the process of exploring options for alternative space to house its editorial and business offices.
Since closing the company’s printing operations in 2008 and sending its publications to Trumbull Printing in Trumbull, Conn., there has been a decrease in space needed for staff to produce its weekly and other publications. Given the use of more efficient digital technology as well, the total amount of space needed for each department has diminished in recent years.
“Other news organizations, much larger than we, have had the same experience,” said Chairman John E. Baumgardner Jr. “If we can save money, have more efficient operations and lessen our environmental footprint all at the same time, those will be good results of a move.”
The company owns the building on Bissell Street. It publishes community weekly news in The Lakeville Journal, The Millerton News, The Winsted Journal and at www.tricornernews.com, as well as covering the arts weekly in Compass. Other company publications include the monthly TriCorner Real Estate and annual special sections, such as Towns & Villages, Fall Improvements and the Holiday Gift Guide.
The Lakeville Journal staff works out of the Bissell Street building, and the editors of The Millerton News and Winsted Journal work at that space when their newspapers are in production and then sent to the printer each week. The Lakeville Journal Company will continue to rent space in Millerton and Winsted for the staffs of The Millerton News and The Winsted Journal to be easily available to the residents in the towns they cover.
“There is no timeline now for this potential move,” added publisher Janet Manko. “We are evaluating the possibilities carefully, so there will be no interruption of services to our communities during any transition.”
