FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School baseball got its first win of the 2023 season on April 6, beating the Gilbert Yellowjackets 7-2. The Mountaineers looked to be in good form in the early days of the season.
HVRHS senior Logan Dean got off to a hot start on the mound and put Gilbert out in order in just 11 pitches. Senior Noah Shippa set the wheels in motion offensively for Housy with a double that sent sophomore Aiden Miller to third. With two on, freshman Anthony Foley stepped up and brought them both home to put the Mountaineers ahead 2-0 in the first.
Gilbert got on the board in the second, but HVRHS added three more runs of their own, led by Foley who tacked on two more RBIs in the bottom of the inning.
The game remained at 5-1 until the bottom of the fourth when freshman Owen Riemer came home on an RBI from Miller. Later in the fourth, Shippa found home to extend the lead to 7-1.
Dean conceded a second run in the top of the seventh and gave Gilbert a glimmer of hope when he loaded up the bases with just one out. Gilbert’s dugout started rooting for a rally in hopes of bringing their baserunners home and mounting a late-game comeback.
Fueled by the pressure, Dean homed in on the strike zone and brought the heat. He remained unfazed by the opposing dugout and closed out the game with back-to-back punchouts.
Dean threw 88 pitches in the Mountaineers’ win and logged eight strikeouts. Housatonic was led in hitting by Foley, who ended 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs. Miller hit 1 for 3 with an RBI and Shippa went 1 for 3 with a double.
Housatonic baseball (1-1) will be back on Ed Kirby Field on Monday, April 17 when they host Shepaug Valley (2-1) at 3:45 p.m.
