Salisbury soccer beats Kent 3-1

KENT — On a 68-degree and sunny afternoon in Kent, Salisbury School Crimson Knights soccer defeated the Kent School Lions 3-1.

Both teams arrived at South Field Pitch on Sept. 20 looking for their first win of the year. Salisbury opened the season with a loss to Deerfield Academy the previous week and Kent went 0-1-2 in preseason play.

The Crimson Knights got started in a hurry with Obed Opoku connecting with the back of the net in just the eighth minute. Looking to guard a 1-0 lead, Salisbury settled in to midfield passing and controlled possession.

Kent caught a fast break midway through the first half and Jack Long ate a slide tackle in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. After a psychological stare-down, Long shot left and the goalie leaped right, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie at the 26th minute.

A defensive battle ensued for the remainder of the half and the score stayed 1-1 at intermission.

Salisbury shifted gears in the second half and took control of the game. Opoku scored in the 47th minute and the Knights dominated possession from there on out.

Kent keeper Will Hudson put on an inspired performance in the net. He made six saves in the game with four coming in the second half.

Stanley Obeng Ansong snuck one in for Salisbury in the 63rd minute, bringing the lead to 3-1. Kent found a few breakaways late in the match, but were unable to drive one home.

Salisbury advanced to 1-1 on the season. The Knights home opener will be against Avon Old Farms at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 30.

Kent will look to bounce back when they return to South Field Pitch to host Deerfield Academy at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 30.
