Largest showing ever for Blue and Gold at the White

SALISBURY — Abigail Johnson won Best in Show for her sculpture, “Hanging On,” at The Blue and Gold at The White art show on Friday evening, May 19.

Members of the community were invited to The White Gallery in Lakeville to see the exhibit of pieces by Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) students. The exhibit ran from Friday, May 19, to Sunday, May 21.

There were 120 works by approximately 60 students. Tino Galluzzo, the gallery’s co-owner, said it was the largest number of pieces he has ever accepted for this exhibit.

The pieces were for sale for $100 (unless marked as not for sale).

To display the art, Galluzzo said that the pieces were laid out on the floor throughout the gallery facing upward so that the artist’s name remained unknown. The judges were artists Scott Bricher and Ed Martinez, both from Kent. The duo volunteered their time to judge each piece and decide on winners in four categories: Best in Show, Best Photography, Best Two-Dimensional work and Best Graphic.

The awards were given at 6 p.m. in the gallery.  In addition to the Best in Show award for Johnson, the winners were: Alison Holmes, Best Photography, for “School of Thought.” The Best Two-Dimensional piece was Emily Sullivan’s “Cylinder of Mine, Sphere of Yours.” Ewa Urbanowicz won Best Graphic for her screen print on cotton titled “Fawn.”

Ben Eckstein, a junior from Sharon had a photograph in the exhibit called “Small World.” It displayed a succulent plant that he found in the high school’s greenhouse. Eckstein said he sprayed water on the plant and used spotlights to take the photo.

A sophomore from Cornwall, Ella Matsudaira, showed a painting of an avocado. She had three pieces in the exhibit, a scratchboard, an oil and an acrylic. She said she has taken drawing and painting classes and is currently doing an independent study with HVRHS art teacher Warren Prindle.

Prindle said his colleague, teacher Laura Victore, has been working with the students on photography. He said she is responsible for the many photographs in the show, and the varied approaches to  photography.
