Learn the ins and outs of the theater through summer internship

ANCRAM — Stage struck opera enthusiasts and others interested in helping nonprofit organizations obtain funding have great opportunity to gain valuable experience while supporting the well known Ancram Opera House.

According to Codirector Jeff Mousseau, the organization is seeking summer interns of all ages starting with seniors in high school and ranging up to “non-traditional” retired seniors with internships tailored to the individual’s interests and strengths.

He said that while the work could provide some general experience, in the main it would divide into two areas: production and administration. The latter would consist of grant writing, public relations, fundraising and other aspects of the group’s office work.

But, he added, “If someone was really interested more in the production side, which would definitely be more theater centric, they would be involved with supporting rehearsals, being on a running crew for a show, being involved back stage, that kind of thing.”

He said the organization’s needs are “a little fluid,” so they are looking for between two and four interns with applications and resumes due by Saturday, June 15. If the information indicates a possible “fit,” Mousseau will reach out for an interview and references.

“We welcome folks from various backgrounds interested in the theater, who have experience in the theater, want to know more about the theater or who are interested in the nuts and bolts of a nonprofit organization,” Mousseau  said. “We would welcome them to engage with our local community through the internship program.”

The Opera House at 1330 County Route 7 was once a linchpin of the Ancram community — the 1920’s local Grange Hall. It eventually fell into disuse until the 1970s, before it became home to various functions including theater and musical events.

Its current incarnation dates from 2015 when the organization gained nonprofit status and began performances, classes and workshops.
