Learn more about transfer station at March 3 meeting

SALISBURY — The Board of Selectmen set Tuesday, March 3, for an informational meeting regarding the new Salisbury-Sharon Resource Recovery Authority during an unusually brief (approximately 15 minutes) regular meeting Monday, Feb. 2.

The selectmen also appointed Jonathan Dowd to the Water Pollution Control Authority and moved the time of next month’s regular selectmen’s meeting on Monday, March 2, to 2 p.m. to accommodate First Selectman Curtis Rand, who has a scheduling conflict that day.

Rand said he was “heartened by last Friday’s vote in Sharon to join the new transfer station arrangement (see story, page A1) — and to commit to sharing the cost of purchasing the former Luke-Fitting property as the new station’s site.

“We’ll bring this to our voters, first with the informational meeting, and then we’ll schedule a vote two or three weeks later. Let’s get it done in March, said Rand.

In the meantime the property is being surveyed for the deed description, he added.

Rand reported that Wireless Edge, the company that owns the cell phone tower in town —  and which had indicated some months ago that it was looking to sell the facility — has not been in touch.

“I haven’t heard anything back, said Rand.

The selectmen took a few moments to praise the work of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. “It’s impressive, said Selectman Bob Riva.

“I’ve sat in on some of the subcommittee meetings. They are so focused, added Rand.

The selectmen also approved seven tax refunds for a total of $751.54.

The artist called ransome

‘Migration Collage' by ransome

Alexander Wilburn

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.
