Thanks to a caring community, a dog is found

There are many reasons why I love living in our small town.

The kindness of strangers, a sharp and caring first selectman and a devoted animal control handler all conspired to somehow ensure that my frisky Irish terrier, who bolted while we were hiking on Turnip Top, was found.

Thank you, Curtis Rand, for putting a recovery plan into immediate action.

Thank you, Lee Sohl, for calling me within minutes of hanging up with Curtis and giving me reassurance, expert advice and the ability to broadcast my lost dog on Facebook.

Thank you, Fern Brazee and Salisbury School, for being in the loop.

And, a huge warm thank you to Becky, whoever you are, my beautiful angel who found a frightened, confused dog wandering in the dark on a busy Route 44 and kept her safe.

I am blessed, indeed.

I love where I live.

Gifts to buy? Think local

Holiday shopping season is close upon us, especially for gifts to be mailed to distant friends and families.

One of the attractions of our small towns is easy access to locally owned stores and the friendly help they hire. Local and regional businesses carry clothing, sporting goods, plants and gardening equipment, food baskets, books, artisan crafts, movie tickets, and lots of other good stuff, including gift certificates that are always welcome.

Buying online can seem convenient, but impersonal businesses do not provide jobs for friends and acquaintances in our own communities, nor is any of the money spent returned locally. Once a local business loses its foot traffic or finds  competition too great a challenge, that business folds. Nearby entrepreneurs are ready to help with your holiday plans.

BTW: A subscription to this newspaper is a great idea.

Thanks for supporting Housing Trust

The Salisbury Housing Trust would like to thank all who made our art auction on Saturday, Nov. 18, a success. We are grateful for the support of the community for our work to bring affordable home ownership to Salisbury.

We would especially like to thank Elaine LaRoche, who graciously allowed us to use the breathtaking space at Lion Rock Farm to host our event.

We would also like to thank the artists and gallery who donated their work to this cause and all our friends who bid on the artwork.

Special thanks to the local businesses that supported the event: Sharon Package Store, Salisbury Wines, Cascade Mountain Winery, The White Hart and LaBonne’s Markets.

The Salisbury Housing Trust seeks to provide home ownership for those who live, work and volunteer in Salisbury through private funding. Donations raised at this event will go toward the purchase of the Trust’s 14th home.

The Trust welcomes applications for homeownership. For more information, visit www.salisburyhousingtrust.org.
