Selectman embraces far-flung theories

On a day when millions of Americans remembered those who lost their lives in and responding to once unimaginable terrorist attacks, Michael Renzullo, a selectman from Winsted, got up bright and early Sept. 11 and told his friends to “educate yourselves” through a website steeped in conspiracy.

Mr. Renzullo, it seems, wants his 1,000 or so social media friends — many of them constituents — to know he believes that someone other than jihadists in airline cockpits took down the World Trade Center towers. And it’s clear that he’s passionate about the conjecture: Why else would an elected official pick the worst possible time to try to convince his constituents of the far-flung fringe theory?

This latest chapter of Mr. Renzullo’s life in the public eye further illustrates irresponsible idiosyncrasies that place him far afield from the values of people he’s tasked to represent. For this selectman, it’s time for something stronger than a comment on his latest Internet rant. A resounding Election Day vote that pushes him out of office is appropriate.

Still from "The King of In between"

There is a scene in “The King of In Between,” a documentary about musician Garland Jeffreys, that shows his name as the answer to a question on the TV show “Jeopardy!”

“This moment was the film in a nutshell,” said Claire Jeffreys, the film’s producer and director, and Garland’s wife of 40 years. “Nobody knows the answer,” she continued. “So, you’re cool enough to be a Jeopardy question, but you’re still obscure enough that not one of the contestants even had a glimmer of the answer.”
