Library offers fall programs to patrons of all ages

PINE PLAINS — Now that summer vacation has come to an end and children are back in the classroom, the Pine Plains Free Library is organizing programs and events for the community during the fall season.

“It’s a little bit harder to get kids here when school starts,” said Pine Plains Free Library Director Veronica Stork, “so we try to send flyers to the school to make sure their parents know what’s going on.”

As a way of appealing to students during the school year, the library partnered with the Pine Plains Central School District to have students dropped off to the library after school. Given the success of last year’s partnership, Stork hopes it can done this year. Additionally, she said there was some discussion about having an after-school Lego club on Wednesdays, though no specific plans have been announced.

“We get a lot of kids in the summer and they all disappear, so we hope to keep them engaged as much as possible and hold the fort down,” she said.

The library invited students in first through third grade to attend Dino-Slime Storytime on Friday, Sept. 7. Beginning at 5 p.m., a trio of children listened to stories with a dinosaur theme before making a batch of Dino-Slime. Using Elmer’s clear glue and magic liquid, the children mixed the materials by hand, adding glitter, sparkles, colors and dinosaur figurines to the slime before packaging it in a Ziploc bag.

On top of children’s programming, the library is looking into adult programs for the community this fall. From Monday, Sept. 24, through Saturday, Sept. 29, the library will be partnering with the Pine Plains Republican Committee and Pine Democratic Committee to provide residents with information about voting in this year’s election on Nov. 6.

Come Saturday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the library will host a Harvest Festival fundraiser for the community, complete with a petting zoo, barbecue, face painting and more. The winner of the library’s logo contest will also be announced at the festival, to be used as the library’s official logo and be printed on various library merchandise.
