Local karate students earn black belts

NORFOLK — Owen Lovejoy and Kendra McCaw, both 15, earned their first Dan black belts in the style of Cheezic Tang Soo Do karate at a ceremony at Botelle School on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Lovejoy is a sophomore at Northwestern Regional High School and said he has been working to obtain his black belt for six years.“It took a lot of hard work to obtain this belt,” Lovejoy said. “Through karate, I learned a lot of leadership skills, as well as the ability to work with others.” McCaw, who is also a sophomore at Northwestern Regional High School, said she has worked to obtain the black belt for seven years.“I am very excited that I’ve gotten the black belt,” she said. “Thanks to karate, I have obtained a sense of confidence.” Karate teacher Kim Janak said she is proud of both Lovejoy and McCaw. “I think that they are both spectacular,” Janek said. “They obtained their black belts because of their many years of hard work, dedication, and positive attitudes.”

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
