Local tomatoes are appearing at stands, markets

Most people choose tomatoes for looks or for flavor, or for the recipe they plan to use. A pastier tomato is good for sauce and roasting, a seedier, wet tomato is better for a salad.

But there’s another variable to consider: Different types of tomatoes offer different levels of health benefits.

According to WebMD, tomatoes contain all four major carotenoids and are specifically high in lycopene. Lycopene not only gives tomatoes their deep red color, but also has a strong correlation to bone health.

Local tomatoes are just starting to appear at farm stands and markets. Here’s what a few of them are selling.

Daisi Hill Farm in Millerton has been selling Jet Star tomatoes for about a month. The World’s Healthiest Foods website noted that Jet Stars are in the top four tomatoes for antioxidants.

Freund’s Farm Market in East Canaan has been selling red, orange and yellow heirloom tomatoes along with their own grape and cherry tomatoes for about a month.

Paley’s Farm Market’s own tomatoes are not yet on the shelves, but they are selling greenhouse-grown Vermont heirlooms and New Jersey beefsteaks. The Paley tomatoes should be available soon.
