Macaires to open restaurant on Main Street

SALISBURY — Eric and Liz Macaire confirmed last week that they have leased the space on Main Street most recently occupied by Peter Becks Village Store. They plan to open a restaurant called The Lock-up (in honor of the name of the street at their intersection).

The menu items are still in flux, but Macaire said that there will definitely be mussels, served in a variety of ways. He gained fame at his New York City restaurant Jubilee for mussels served a dozen different ways.

Macaire also owned and started the Bubble Lounge champagne bar in Manhattan. He and his wife (who live in Salisbury) also owned The Bottle Tree in Ancramdale.

Macaire is doing the construction and renovation work at the space himself, and hopes to be ready to open by June 10 (the anniversary of Jubilee’s opening). 

At present, he is planning a restaurant with different areas for different activities, including counter stools that allow diners to look out onto the street and the village, as well as more traditional banquettes and booths. There will be a glass-enclosed bar in the center of the restaurant, and there will be cold cases with cold foods in the front area, with takeout available. 

In back, there are three or four small rooms that will be converted into play areas for youngsters, so parents can enjoy a little dining leisure while their children play in the back (there will be child care available and games, such as Xbox or Wii).

And for all ages, there will be a pool table in the back of the restaurant. 

The Macaires promised to share more details as they become definite. In the meantime, passersby are welcome to stop in and say hello if they see them at work in the space.

Opening on Sept. 26, Agatha Christie’s legendary whodunit “The Mousetrap” brings suspense and intrigue to the Sharon Playhouse stage, as the theater wraps up its 2025 Mainstage Season with a bold new take on the world’s longest-running play.

Running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 5, “The Mousetrap” marks another milestone for the award-winning regional theater, bringing together an ensemble of exceptional local talent under the direction of Broadway’s Hunter Foster, who also directed last season’s production of “Rock of Ages." With a career that spans stage and screen, Foster brings a fresh and suspense-filled staging to Christie’s classic.

Plein Air Litchfield returns for a week of art in the open air

For six days this autumn, Litchfield will welcome 33 acclaimed painters for the second year of Plein Air Litchfield (PAL), an arts festival produced by Art Tripping, a Litchfield nonprofit.

The public is invited to watch the artists at work while enjoying the beauty of early fall. The new Belden House & Mews hotel at 31 North St. in Litchfield will host PAL this year.
