Mary Jane (Driscoll) Bruey

NORFOLK — Mary Jane (Driscoll) Bruey, 80, of Norfolk, died peacefully at her home on May 11, 2010.

She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Lyle D. Bruey.

Mary Jane was born April 12, 1930, the daughter of the late   Sara (Murphy) and Edward M.  Driscoll, and was a lifelong resident of Norfolk.

She grew up on her family’s dairy farm and attended The Gilbert School in Winsted. She worked for several years for Southern New England Telephone Company in Norfolk and North Canaan.

A devout communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Norfolk, Mary Jane was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club, a CCD teacher, lector and head of the liturgical committee. In 2006, she received the Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation. In more recent years, Mary Jane volunteered her time at Geer Memorial Hospital.

Mary Jane devoted her life to caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.  She especially enjoyed trips to Cape Cod, Irish music, summer days at Tobey Pond, endless hours of playing games with her grandchildren, and the company of her treasured friends.

She is survived by her six children and their families, Deborah Auclair and her husband, John, of Norfolk, Timothy Bruey and his wife, Mary (Kochiss) Bruey, of Norfolk, Mary Pat Lasko and her husband, Robert, of Norfolk, Lyle J. Bruey and his wife, Diane (Green) Bruey, of Colebrook, Ann Switzgable and her husband, Robert, of New Hartford and Elizabeth Ross and her husband, Douglas, of Brandon, Vt.; two brothers, Edward Driscoll of Torrington and William Driscoll of Norfolk; 16 grandchildren, Denise (Bruey) Colella, Maureen Bruey, Jacqueline Bruey, Daniel Auclair, Brian Lasko, Emily Bruey, Nicholas Lasko, Andrew Bruey, Hannah Lasko, Rebecca Bruey, Benjamin Switzgable, Wesley Switzgable, Shawn Bruey, Samuel Switzgable, William Ross and Elinor Ross; one great-granddaughter, Lily Rose Colella; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Driscoll.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Norfolk Lions Club Ambulance or the Immaculate Conception Church.

Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home in Norfolk.

Funeral services were held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Norfolk on May 15.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
