Medal for HVRHS at Geography Challenge

FALLS VILLAGE — A team of five students from Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) finished a strong third among a record number of teams at the Connecticut High School Geography Challenge at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain on Wednesday, May 22.

The Connecticut High School Geography Challenge is a statewide interscholastic academic team competition hosted by Central Connecticut State University and its Department of Geography.

The theme of the competition was “Global Health and Disease.” There are four elements to the competition: map reading, problem solving, orienteering and quiz bowl, with all problems and questions revolving around the theme.

A team from Fairfield’s Warde High School took first place, while Old Lyme High School finished second.  Only six points separated the top three teams.  The HVRHS team was comprised of students Sasha Allen, Soren Clulow, Shane Stampfle, Marijke Stiffler and Keaeton Terrall.

In 11th place after the first round, the HVRHS team staged a furious comeback to reach the medal stand for the second straight year.

Social studies teacher Peter Vermilyea is the team coach.
