Michael O'Neill 'Tag' Tognalli

NORTH CANAAN — Michael O’Neill “Tag†Tognalli, 55, died suddenly on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., after returning that day from Afghanistan, where he spent a month serving as an official presidential election observer with the International Republican Institute.  

Michael was born on June 12, 1954, the only child of the late Reno J. Togninalli and Eleanore (O’Neill) Tognalli.

Michael graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1978. He was actively involved in national Republican politics for 30 years. He worked for President Ronald Reagan at the White House for the full eight years of the Reagan Administration. In 1989, Michael was awarded the Reagan Revolution Medal of Honor by the Reagan Alumni Association for “exceptionally distinguished service to the presidency of Ronald Reagan.† 

After the Reagan Administration, Michael became the vice president and chief operating officer of Intracorp Entertainment, Inc., a leading software developer, publisher and distributor based in Florida.

He moved back to his hometown of North Canaan in 1996 to take care of his beloved mother, Eleanore, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.  He devoted the next 12 years to caring for her at home, until she passed away a year ago.  

Most recently, Michael was an active member of Republicans for Obama. At the time of his death, he was planning to move back to Washington to re-enter political life there.  

Michael is survived by four aunts, Ruth O’Neill of Colchester, Sylvia Sartori, Alice Alquesta and Stella Togninalli of North Canaan; many cousins; two godchildren, Siena Chevalier of Sharon and Andrew McBride of Washington; and numerous good friends.  

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Edward and Sarah O’Neill of North Canaan; his paternal grandparents, John and Lina Togninalli of North Canaan; three uncles, Ed O’Neill Jr. of New York City, Francis O’Neill of Winsted and Guido Togninalli of North Canaan; eight aunts, Ann O’Neill and Pegi Berenson of Harwinton, Lilian Larkin of Sharon, Mary Baker of Missouri, Rita Renkl of Torrington, Kristine Corcoran, Edith Piretti and Alda Coe of North Canaan; and goddaughter, Erin Corcoran of Coventry.  

A funeral mass will held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in North Canaan at noon.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project,  woundedwarriorproject.org; The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Legacy of Giving,  reaganfoundation.org;  or The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, sldn.org.  

Arrangements are under the care of the DeVol Funeral Home in Washington.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
