In 100 words or less, explain what you think is the biggest issue facing your town and how you plan on addressing that once in office.
The biggest issue facing Millbrook is the massive debt we have recently incurred.  We need to examine ways to reduce it; including sharing services with the town, a thorough audit of all village expenses and departments and using tax revenues we are already receiving in the most efficient ways possible. We must also ensure no more money is wasted on Thorne or Bennett until final determinations are made.  The main reason why this debt is so dangerous is because instead of having a financial cushion in case of a fiscal crisis, we will instead be stuck in the red.

Have you served in this position before and for how long?
No.

What makes your town special in comparison to  the whole of Dutchess County?
The village of Millbrook and the surrounding town is a wonderful place to live and a raise a family, start a business and visit. People from all over the world marvel at the bucolic countryside, the abundance of natural resources, and the friendly people. The village itself is filled with many wonderful independent shops, restaurants and businesses.  Hundreds attend the annual Independence Day fireworks display, Fireman’s Carnival and Parade and the Holiday lighting display.  While many areas have succumbed to development, Millbrook maintains its rural history, albeit with all the modern conveniences that a resident might need.

What makes you most qualified for the job?
After studying political science at Union College and working in governmental relations in our nation’s capital, I graduated from Albany Law School. During two summers there, I obtained a thorough understanding of municipal and land use issues while clerking for a law firm and interning for Albany’s Government Law Center. I understand how market downturns have affected our 401(k)’s and pension plans, through my work representing investors in securities proceedings while in law school, and in my current position at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.  This financial expertise will be helpful in the budgetary and fiscal issues the village faces.

In 100 words or less, explain what you think is the biggest issue facing your town and how you plan on addressing that once in office.
The new Millbrook Village Board will face an 80-year-old sewer and water infrastructure, roads that are in dire need of repaving, and a shuttered Thorne Building. There is no long-range plan in place for the future of this historic structure. All of these problems must be addressed and expenditures to resolve the problems need to stay within a 2 percent property tax cap.  I would tackle these issues by sharing services between village and town governments and encouraging board members to work together to set priorities. I will research grants from state, federal and private sources to supplement tax revenues.

Have you served in this position before and for how long?
I have not served as a village trustee.

What makes your town special in comparison to  the whole of Dutchess County?
The village of Millbrook is a unique combination of old-fashioned country charm and understated elegance.  When decorated, Christmas trees and displays line the street at night in December, you would swear you had been transported inside a Currier and Ives postcard.

What makes you most qualified for the job?
Having lived in the village for 26 years, I have a historic perspective on the problems here. As a retired teacher, I have the ability to view the job of trustee as a full-time occupation.

In 100 words or less, explain what you think is the biggest issue facing your town and how you plan on addressing that once in office.
The biggest issue facing the village of Millbrook is to continue providing essential services to the residents of the village without raising taxes. The village has had to contend with an uninsured claim that, to date, has exceeded $1,000,000.00. Through fiscal restraint and oversight, municipal services have not been compromised. The Village Board is committed to a business-friendly approach in its administration of zoning and planning ordinances while preserving the village’s quaint and historic atmosphere.

Have you served in this position before and for how long?
I have served two prior four-year terms as village trustee.

What makes your town special in comparison to  the whole of Dutchess County?
Millbrook is an enviable place to live because it is nestled in bucolic splendor in a charming and friendly community.

What makes you most qualified for the job?
Prior experience as trustee and legal background.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
