Monte’s pitches health food store

AMENIA — Representatives from Monte’s Local Kitchen & Tap Room appeared before the Planning Board on Wednesday, June 24, with a new application for a health food store.

“We want to promote healthy eating,” said John Lomitola, one of Monte’s principals.

The application proposes use of a 3,349-square-foot building at 51 Mechanic St., two properties south of the restaurant.

The store is designated for only the downstairs of the building.

“It’s just a row of shelves on one side, a couple of reach-in coolers for the colder drinks and things like that and then a section ... with vitamins and supplements and so forth,” Lomitola said.

Lomitola said potential store names are “Health Hut Nut” and “Monte’s High on Life.”

The applicant submitted a short Environmental Assessment Form (EAF) and awaits input from the county before the town Planning Board can act.

A public hearing for the application is currently scheduled for the Planning Board’s July 22 meeting at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.

Silo Ridge

Ongoing topics regarding the Silo Ridge Field Club application were also discussed during the meeting. 

The applicant has agreed to extend the Planning Board’s deadline for acting on submittals to July 31.

The board has until then to make decisions on the applicant’s subdivision plan, revised site plan, amended master development plan and a special use permit.

The special use permit is sought by the applicant “to locate [its] wastewater treatment plant in the office/commercial (OC) district and to store greater than 500 pounds in the OC district,” according to Planning Board Attorney Dave Everett.

Items discussed within those four areas include a field change protocol and an amended State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) findings statement.

An approved field change protocol would establish standards for what subsequent field changes during construction would require approval from the board.

A SEQRA findings statement from the town’s consultants has to be adopted before the board can issue approvals or denials, Everett said.

A subsequent special meeting for ongoing Silo Ridge matters was scheduled for Wednesday, July 1. A regular Planning Board meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, after press time.

Plein Air Litchfield returns for a week of art in the open air

For six days this autumn, Litchfield will welcome 33 acclaimed painters for the second year of Plein Air Litchfield (PAL), an arts festival produced by Art Tripping, a Litchfield nonprofit.
