More problems for high school boiler room

WEBUTUCK — Another fuel-feeder line cracked in the Webutuck High School boiler room on Saturday, Jan. 17. The incident caused plumes of smoke, but no fire.

According to school district Superintendent Richard Johns, the damage spilled fuel onto the boiler room floor. The interruption in the fuel line caused an inappropriate fuel-to-air mix in the boiler, which in turn caused the boiler to send out clouds of smoke through the chimney.

The Amenia and Millerton fire departments responded to the call. A local firm was called to address the fuel spill. According to Johns, all the excessive smoke was outside of the building. There was no one in the high school at the time.

All fuel feeder lines had been inspected and fixed by a vendor after the first incident, said Johns, which occurred on Dec. 8, and resulted in a fire in the boiler room the following day. Students were evacuated from the building at that time and sent home. There was no determination as to why the fuel line had broken, although the fire was eventually attributed to improper cleanup of fuel that had spilled outside the tanks.

As for the current problem, Johns said he didn’t know how the feeder lines cracked again, as they were all new, although he suspected it was the result of some kind of vibration.

"We’ve had everybody and their dog look at this thing, trying to figure out what the problem is," he said.

The furnace repair company has installed new flexible feeder lines on both boilers, which Johns said he hopes will solve the problem once and for all.
