Mozart, Mendelssohn (Natch)And Something Gaelic, Too

After all the St. Patrick’s celebrations, there’s still a chance to hear some great Gaelic music this weekend from The Battlefield Band, Friday, March 20, at the Towne Crier in Pawling, NY. This sensational Scottish group has been around for close to 30 years, and gets a lot of airplay on WAMC’s “Thistle and Shamrock†radio show.

A reminder: the Felix Mendelssohn bicentennial celebration that began on Feb. 3 continues this weekend with a pair of concerts by the fine choral group Crescendo, under Christine Gevert’s direction: March 21 at the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington, MA, at 7:30 p.m., and again on March 22 at Trinity Episcopal Church on Route 112 in the Lime Rock section of Salisbury at 4 p.m. The concert includes music by Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny, and J. S. Bach.

Music sung by younger and shorter choristers can also be heard on Mar. 22 at 2 p.m., when Chorus Angelicus, the famed children’s choir, performs at Infinity Hall in Norfolk. Tickets are $22 and $32. Add costumes and dancing to young voices, plus a trip down a rabbit hole and you’ve got “Alice in Wonderland Jr.†The creators of “High School Musical†created this zesty fast-paced family show based on the 1951 Disney animated film with all the wonderful songs by Sammy Fain, Mack David and others —“A Very Merry Unbirthday,†“I’m Late, I’m Late,†with “Zippidy Doo Dah†added for good measure. The talented kids of the Falls Village Children’s Theater offer their production, directed and choreographed by Lanny Mitchell, March 27 and 28 at 7 p.m., and March 29 at 2 p.m. at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

Housy’s own spring musical this year is Cole Porter’s delightful “Anything Goes,†with such favorites as “You’re the Top,†“I Get a Kick Out ºof You†and “Blow, Gabriel, Blow.†Curtain goes up Thursday, March 19, through Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. The large, enthusiastic cast plus a great band led by Michael Berkeley will have your toes tapping.

Infinity Hall is also the spot for a concert by one of America’s rising young chamber ensembles, the Jasper String Quartet. The graduate quartet-in-residence at the Yale School of Music, they have just won four prestigious prizes and have performed all over the country and in Europe, with a wide-ranging repertoire. March 25 at 7:30 p.m. $18, $25. On the program: Mozart, Schumann and and British composer Thomas Adès.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
