Muriel Rea

MANCHESTER — Muriel (Gardiner) Rea, 87, of Vernon and formerly of Manchester, widow of Thomas W. Rea, died Sept. 7, 2008, at an area convalescent home.

Born in Hartford April 14, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Katherine (Quigley) and Edward Gardiner. She was raised in Hartford and moved to Manchester in 1958. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Bridget Church, a member of VFW Post 2046 Auxiliary and a longtime secretary for the Delta Club. She was an avid reader and was a frequent contributor to the letters page of the Hartford Courant.

Mrs. Rea is survived by two daughters and three sons, Ellen Tarpinian and her husband, Arthur, of Ellington, Nancy Demirgian and her husband, Richard, of Broad Brook, Thomas Rea Jr. and his wife, Maria, of Winsted, Timothy Rea and his wife, Edith, of Coventry, and Jeffrey Rea and his wife, Diane, of Andover; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Lorraine Sullivan.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, MaryJane Wilde; a brother, Edward Gardiner; and two sisters, Gertrude Conn and Catherine Donovan.

Funeral services and burial were held Sept. 11 in Manchester. The Holmes Funeral Home in Manchester has care of arrangements.

Mrs. Rea’s family thanked the staff at Vernon Manor and DaVita Dialysis for the wonderful care and kindness provided to their mother.

LAKEVILLE — Nearly a month after closing the public hearing on the proposed Wake Robin Inn redevelopment, the Planning and Zoning Commission began its deliberations last week over the course of two special meetings devoted solely to the controversial project.

Over four hours of discussion helped the Commission to establish its position at this stage in the process, about a month before its statutory window to render a decision expires on Nov. 13.

Fallen tree cancels jubilee

The roof of the Grove was damaged by the tree, the event tent was punctured, a chef was injured and the Jubilee Luncheon was canceled Sunday, Oct. 12.

LAKEVILLE — The Lakeville Journal and The Millerton News Jubilee Luncheon fundraiser at the Grove Sunday, Oct. 12 was canceled after a very large section of a tree fell on the caterer’s tent at about 10 a.m.

Most of the catering staff heard the tree breaking up and got out of the tent in time, but the chef was hit by the falling limbs and sustained non-critical injuries.

Rhys V. Bowen

LAKEVILLE — Rhys V. Bowen, 65, of Foxboro, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly in his sleep on Sept. 15, 2025. Rhys was born in Sharon, Connecticut, on April 9, 1960 to Anne H. Bowen and the late John G. Bowen. His brother, David, died in 1979.

Rhys grew up at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, where his father taught English. Attending Hotchkiss, Rhys excelled in academics and played soccer, basketball, and baseball. During these years, he also learned the challenges and joys of running, and continued to run at least 50 miles a week, until the day he died.
