Nancy Lee (Saunders) Ongley

SHARON — Nancy Lee (Saunders) Ongley, 86, peacefully entered into eternal rest at her home on March 27, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at noon on Saturday, April 6, at The Sharon Congregational Church in Sharon. Friends and family are invited to a reception at the church immediately following the services.

A private burial at the Salisbury Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon.

Nancy was born in Waterbury, Conn., on July 8, 1932, the daughter of the late Russell Devnew Saunders and Ann Lee Scott Saunders.

Nancy attended primary and secondary schools both in Connecticut and Massachusetts. In the fall of 1950, Nancy was accepted at the Waterbury School of Nursing. She earned her nursing degree in September of 1953. Immediately following graduation, Nancy married the love of her life, the late Alfred “Al” Sherwood Ongley, on Sept. 26, 1953. They were married for 58 years at the time of Al’s passing in October, 2011.

Nancy worked as a Registered Nurse for 65 years, with her last assignment as recent as October, 2018. She spent 39 rewarding years of her nursing career as an obstetrical and gynecological nurse at the Sharon Hospital until her retirement. Following her retirement from Sharon Hospital, Nancy worked at Geer Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, the Geer Adult Day Center and per diem at Sharon Center School. In her free time, Nancy loved being a spectator at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. You would see her on the sidelines, along with Al, cheering at a Housy football game, soccer game, track meet, basketball game and ringside at a horse show. Nancy loved the Lord, plants, birds, a good book, a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and she knew more about the Boston Red Sox than Don and Jerry.

Nancy is survived by her children, Joanne and her husband, Joe, John and his wife, Heather, and Stephen; and her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, who affectionately called her Mimi.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Al; her sons, Edward and Robert; and her little dog, Suzie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Sharon Congregational Church, 25 Main St., Sharon, CT 06069; or Bee Tree Veterinary Clinic, 13 West Main St., Sharon, CT 06069.

The family would like to lovingly acknowledge the “Angels on Earth” from NW VNA Hospice (Debbie, Tanya, Christine and Jill) who assisted us in providing professional, dignified and compassionate care for Nancy.

SALISBURY — The Twin Lakes Association is taking an earlier and more aggressive approach to fighting the spread of invasive hydrilla in East Twin Lake by dosing the whole northeast bay, from May through October, with low-level herbicide treatments instead of spot treatments.

The goal, said Russ Conklin, the TLA’s vice president of lake management, is to sustain herbicide concentration over the 2025 growing season.
