NASCAR double-header was a real gas at Lime Rock Park

LIME ROCK — It was a fast and fun Independence Day weekend for NASCAR fans as Lime Rock Park hosted the K&N Pro Series and Whelen Modified tour double-header on Friday, July 2, and Saturday, July 3.

Crowd estimates were not available at press time, but the hills of Lime Rock were filled with spectators and campers who were watching the races — and enjoying the warm weather.

It was a family-oriented event, with activities for children that included a 50-foot bounce house and go-kart racing on a mini-track. And of course anyone could enjoy the high-speed action on the track — even if they weren’t racing connoisseurs.

“It’s all about raw speed, and as long as the car is going, that’s all that matters,†Bill Balcezak of East Granby said.

Balcezak, a former racecar driver, had brought his 10-year-old son, Robby —who is also an old hand at track events. He has been racing go-karts at the Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., since he was 7 years old.

“My advice to young drivers like my son is for them to race like a gentleman,†Balcezak said. “There are too many drivers out there who think that being a bad boy, when you push and shove the cars around you, is a good thing. Not true. Being a gentleman is the only way to drive.â€

Jim Biondi of Haddam brought his three daughters with him.

“They all just love the noise,†Biondi said, trying to raise his voice above the motorized roar rising up from the cars on the track.

“I’ve been coming here for the past 40 years, and to me it hasn’t changed. People still love it here,†he said. “As for NASCAR, it’s all about family.â€

The weather was perfect for both days of the event, with temperatures somewhat cooler than usual for a Fourth of July weekend.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour took to the track first on Saturday.

Todd Szegedy, from Ridgefield, had the pole sitter position for the race, with his UNOH/Wisk/Snuggle Ford car.

He held the lead for most of the race— until the last four laps, when stock car veteran Dale Quarterley of Westfield, Mass., driving the Furnace & Duct Supply Chevrolet, came up from third place, after putting on a new set of tires with 20 laps to go.

Quarterley won the race, with Szegedy settling for second place, followed by Ron Silk of Norwalk in third.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
