New affordable residences open June 1

KENT  — Tour the new affordable apartments of Kent Affordable Housing (KAH) on Friday, June 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be tours and refreshments.

The Stuart Farm apartments are at 15 Maple St. Extension, not far from the firehouse.

The new units have been in the works for five years and complement the five apartments that became available in 2012. Those original five residences are two two-bedroom units, two single-level units and one handicap-accessible apartment.

Added to those five apartments will be two 2-bedroom units and three 1-bedroom units (one handicap accessible).

The below-market rents are approximately $400, $900 and $1,100 for families making up to 25 percent, 50 percent and 80 percent of the area median income.  Three of the apartments have garages.

The older and new residences were designed by Stephen Lasar Architects of New Milford.

The additional apartments were funded largely by the state Department of Housing but the all-volunteer nonprofit KAH organization also benefited from support from the town of Kent and donations from individuals and businesses in the community.

The Stuart Farms complex is unusual in that it is on a green, historic site near the center of town. The original apartments are in a former farmhouse that “was once the center of a 200-acre farm that has passed through local families whose history goes back before the American Revolution,” according to information from KAH. “The land is graced by stone walls and mature trees (including a champion surviving American elm) and is bordered by land preserves on two sides.”

Additional Kent Affordable Housing projects for the near future include three more units nearby at 19 Maple St. Extension and an extensive updating of the 24 apartments at South Common (off Route 7 south of town).

For more information, go to www.kentaffordablehousing.org, send an email to info@kentaffordablehousing.org — and of course attend the opening celebration on June 1.

Judge throws out zoning challenge tied to Wake Robin Inn expansion

A judge recently dismissed one lawsuit tied to the proposed redevelopment, but a separate court appeal of the project’s approval is still pending.

LAKEVILLE — A Connecticut Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against Salisbury’s Planning and Zoning Commission challenging a zoning amendment tied to the controversial expansion of the Wake Robin Inn.

The case focused on a 2024 zoning regulation adopted by the P&Z that allows hotel development in the Rural Residential 1 zone, where the historic Wake Robin Inn is located. That amendment provided the legal basis for the commission’s approval of the project in October 2025; had the lawsuit succeeded, the redevelopment would have been halted.

A winter visit to Olana

Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home created by 19th-century Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, rises above the Hudson River on a clear winter afternoon.

By Brian Gersten

On a recent mid-January afternoon, with the clouds parted and the snow momentarily cleared, I pointed my car northwest toward Hudson with a simple goal: to get out of the house and see something beautiful.

My destination was the Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home of 19th-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church. What I found there was not just a welcome winter outing, but a reminder that beauty — expansive, restorative beauty — does not hibernate.
