New home found for steeple of church-about-to-be-a-bank

SHEFFIELD — The Rev. Tom Marshall had a good idea that became two good ideas.

Learning that Salisbury Bank & Trust had purchased the former Faith Baptist Church complex on Route 7, Marshall inquired if the lighted sign out front might be available for another use. Marshall, the director of Christian Connection Ministries based in Sheffield, knew Ridley Chapel in Wassaic, N.Y., could use the sign.

“Do you want the steeple, too? came the answer.

As a matter of fact, Marshall also knew that the Rev. Joseph Kima’tu of Hope Outreach Church and Community Center in Springfield could use the spire for a recently acquired storefront space.

Marshall and Terri Anello of Christian Connection Ministries obtained the necessary permits and insurance and recruited volunteer professionals to help. The sign has yet to be uprooted, but the steeple was removed April 13 by a crew that included Wayne Wilkinson, carpenter, Donald Peck, transport, and John Deland, crane operator and owner of Deland Steel in Ashley Falls.

The spire, made of Fibreglass panels on a wood frame, was afixed to the church roof by four bolts, which were loosened from the inside. Volunteers strapped it to a cable and handily removed it. The spire was further unbolted into two sections and placed on a flatbed trailer for travel to Springfield.

Christian Connecticut Ministries, which had no affiliation with Faith Baptist Church, is a non-denominational outreach ministry that collects and redistributes clothing,  and sponsors musical missions and other initiatives throughout western Massachusetts and Connecticut and eastern New York state.

Faith Baptist Church had organized in Great Barrington in 1990. A decade later, the congregation purchased 1.88 acres on Route 7 in Sheffield next to the covered bridge for $75,000. (A house and barn on the property had burned.)

Faith Baptist built a new church and a parsonage attached by a portico.

Within a few years, Faith Baptist closed. The property was sold in 2008 to Covered Bridge Lane LLC for $329,500. Covered Bridge Lane LLC sold the property to Salisbury Bank in November 2009 for $675,000.

Salisbury Bank, which already has a branch office on the Sheffield Green, plans to open a new office here with drive-through banking and other services.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
