New winner, again, for chicken cook-off fundraiser

MILLERTON — Who knows what to chalk it up to, but one thing’s for sure: The gods of barbecued chicken sure like to spread the wealth around.

For the eight years that the Sunday in the Country Chicken Cook-off has been testing area teams’ grilling skills, there has yet to be a repeat winner. That tradition continued this past Saturday, Oct. 23, at American Legion Post 178 in Millerton, as Team Smoothie, a two-man lineup of Chris Milton and Dave Peterson, took home top honors for their cooked bird.

The atmosphere surrounding the chicken cook-off each year is laid back, and it’s all for a good cause: the Sunday in the Country Food Drive. That benefit drive puts on a variety of events that raised approximately $50,000 last year to provide local families in need with dinners on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

But the cooking is definitely taken seriously. A team of judges sample each entry and judge the contestants based on appearance, moisture and flavor. Some of the judges are old hands, while others, like Rosli Abrams, were new to the event this year.

“I was very much surprised at the talent from almost all the teams, she said after the winners were announced. “I had a great time.

A chicken cook-off stalwart, the Ancram Fire Company, was unable to send a team this year due to other fundraising commitments. But they still pitched in and donated the majority of the 250 chickens grilled that day. The rest of the chicken halves were brought in by the Rounders team and the two teams from the Amenia Fire Company, which as event organizer and food drive founder “NASCAR Dave MacMillan explained, was a huge help when it came to collecting funds.

“This is the first fundraiser we ever held, MacMillan noted. “It’s how we started, and the chicken cook-off is still pretty special to us.

Tickets for the event mistakenly stated this was the ninth cook-off, and the trophy inadvertently proclaimed it was the seventh, MacMillan said, laughing. But one thing is clearly laid out, and that’s the upcoming 10th cook-off.

“It’s unbelievable that we haven’t had a repeat winner yet, so if we have a new champion next year, he announced, “the only teams that will be participating in the 10th anniversary will be the nine first-place finishers from the years before.

Third place went to Team Johnny V “and his rednecks from Pennsylvania, as MacMillan announced humorously. That team took home first place last year. Second place went to The Westfall Brothers, who managed to grab the first-place trophy two years prior.

The Millerton News caught up with Team Smoothie just after its win. The Sharon-based duo has competed in the last several events.

“We’ve used different recipes, said Peterson.

“We got this one off the Internet, Milton said, laughing.

Both were mum as far divulging their secrets, but they did offer a heart-felt tribute in light of their victory.

“We’d like to thank Rhonda J. Osolin for shining on us today, Milton said, dedicating their trophy to a person they both hold dear. “We love you always and forever.
