Lease might be needed on Mitchelltown for repairwork

SHARON — The Board of Selectmen held a special meetingon Friday, Aug. 5, to discuss repairs to the Mitchelltown Road bridge — and the possible need to lease land along Mitchelltown Road to store equipment.First Selectman Robert Loucks tried to recuse himself at the beginning of the meeting, saying there is a possible conflict of interest because he owns property on Mitchelltown Road. The other two selectmen (John Mathews and Meg Szalewicz) told Loucks they’d prefer to have him take part in the discussion. The town wants to lease land from Jay Metz, who is the major landowner on the road, Loucks said at the meeting. The land is adjacent to the bridge and would be used to store construction equipment while the repairs are being done. Metz has reportedly not responded to requests from the town to discuss this. The selectmen agreed to arrange a meeting with the town attorney to discuss available legal options to obtain use of the land. The meeting will be held later in the summer, after Szalewicz returns from a trip out of town.Meanwhile, Loucks said he has identified several real estate appraisers as part of a process to establish a fair value for compensation to the landowner for rental of his property. The first selectman has contacted two of them.
