EAST CANAAN — Thomas F. Mullen, 66, of East Canaan, passed away Jan. 23, 2021, at the Berkshire Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.  

He was born April 27, 1954, to the late Evelyn (Welch) and John F. Mullen.

Thomas was a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School, Class of 1972.  He went on to Western Connecticut State University, where he majored in history and was a pitcher for his college baseball team for his four years at WesConn.

After his time at Western, Thomas was employed at Sheffield Plastics-Bayer-Covestro as a supervisor for 38 years, before his retirement in 2016. 

He was a past member of the Torrington Board of the Connecticut Approved Baseball Umpires Association.  He had the pleasure of umpiring with his eldest son, Scott, who was also a fellow member. 

Tom’s favorite pastimes included a warm evening ride on his Harley, a Sunday on Twin Lakes with his family serving as “Captain in Charge,” or an evening by a campfire surrounded by family and friends. He also loved watching his eldest grandson, Reece, play high school football.  Always a history buff, Tom loved reading about World War II. 

Thomas was predeceased by his wife, Becky S. (Conlogue) Mullen. 

He is survived by his sons, Scott and his wife, Heather, Shawn and his companion, Melinda, and Ryan and his wife, Anastasia.  Tom is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Laynie, Reece Thomas, Ryan Jr., Coghlan, Liam, Bella and Camden.  He also leaves behind his sister, Johanna Gulotta and her husband, Leonard, of Canaan; an uncle, F. James Welch of Milford, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Gwendolyn Conlogue; his brothers-in-law, Mark, Michael and Charles Conlogue; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his faithful companion, his dog Keogh.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. in Hillside Cemetery in East Canaan. All are welcome, weather permitting.  

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the family’s discretion.  

Memorial donations may be made to the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 178, North Canaan, CT  06018.  

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan. 

The family wishes to thank the North Canaan Ambulance Squad and the doctors and nurses of the fourth floor CCU at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.  Special thanks go out to Dr. Osmen, Dr. Miranda, Dr. Cynthia Callahan and Jen Bailey.

Restoring Cornwall's lost Revolutionary War grave markers

CORNWALL — On Sunday, May 25, Cornwall held a powerful ceremony to honor local veterans of the Revolutionary War.

At the cemetery on Route 4, about 25 attendees gathered to witness the placement of 10 grave markers. Bill Dinneen of the Cornwall Historical Society and Warren Stevens led the ceremony.

Marvelwood lacrosse goes back-to-back in HVAL

KENT — On Tuesday, May 20, Marvelwood School lacrosse defeated Woodhall School 15-9 in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament final.

It was second straight HVAL championship win for the Pterodactyls and their fifth league title since 2018.

Mountaineers strike gold at BL track championships

HVRHS sophomore Ryan Segalla went three-for-three May 17 with Berkshire League gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. He was also on the gold-winning 4x400m relay team.

Berkshire League track and field wrapped up a season of competition with the league finals in Litchfield May 17. The BL festival followed with decathlon, heptathlon, steeplechase and hammer in Falls Village May 20 and Thomaston May 21.

The events included athletes from Housatonic Valley Regional High School, Gilbert School, Lakeview High School, Nonnewaug High School, Northwestern Regional High School, Shepaug Valley High School, Terryville High School and Thomaston High School.
