Open Door Soup Kitchen to have food drive Saturday

WINSTED — The Open Door Soup Kitchen will hold a canned food drive at Stop & Shop in Ledgewood Plaza on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.The soup kitchen, which has been operating since 1991, is located behind St. James Episcopal Church on 161 Main St.According to acting manager Carrie Delaney, the kitchen serves up to 50 hot meals a day from Monday to Friday.“The soup kitchen runs only on donations,” Delaney said. “Our philosophy is that if it didn’t come in the door, we don’t cook it. We buy very little food. Our staff is staffed by volunteers.”Delaney said that the volunteers and the residents who eat at the kitchen are like family.“We’re all here to make a difference in the community,” she said. The canned food drive will also benefit the Salvation Army food pantry.
