Peter A. Kalmes

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Peter A. Kalmes passed away on Jan. 24, 2019, at his home in Cornwall Bridge, surrounded by his family.

Peter was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Oct. 25, 1935, and grew up across the street from his beloved wife of 59 years, Nancy Banks Kalmes. 

Peter graduated from Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smiths, N.Y., and from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. 

Peter and Nancy settled and raised their three sons, Peter, Robert and Greg in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. 

Peter retired from IBM in 1993 after 35 years with the company. After his retirement, he and Nancy moved full-time to Cornwall Bridge.  

During his years in Cornwall Bridge, Peter worked at the National Iron Bank for several years, and served on many committees, including the Cornwall finance committee, Cornwall Child Center Board and Cornwall Planning and Zoning, and was a volunteer with the Cornwall Fire Department  and the Housatonic Valley Association.

Petie, as he was fondly known by his family, was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. 

Peter is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sons, Peter of Lagrangeville, N.Y., Bob and his wife, Tonya, of Dedham, Mass., and Greg and his wife, Jennifer, of Tekoa, Wash.; and his grandchildren, Megan, Emily, Bronwen, Peter, Cian, Allison and Madison. 

He also leaves his sister-in-law, June Banks of Cornwall Bridge; his brother-in-law, Fred Egloff III of Irvington-on-Hudson, N.Y.; his sister-in-law, Helen Kalmes of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. 

Peter was predeceased by his brother, Fred Kalmes; his sister, Ruth Egloff; and his daughter-in-law, Catherine O’Connor Kalmes. 

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. at the North Cornwall Meeting House. A reception will follow at the United Church of Christ parish house, 8 Bolton Hill Road, Cornwall, CT.
