Pink's NFL Picks 11-26

Last Week: 11-5; for the season, 103-57

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season, 8-3

Yes, I had a decent week, but how about both the Steelers and the Bengals getting upset?  That’s really what makes the NFL intriguing. From week to week there are upsets you could not possibly have seen coming.

My Pick of the Week came in as well, and even though I’m not a big Favre fan, I must admit he is on quite a roll.

This week starts off on Thanksgiving with two stinkers, while the third game and only good one — the Giants at Denver — can only be seen on the NFL network. Well, here’s hoping that everyone enjoys the true spirit of Thanksgiving, and good luck with your picks.

Thursday, Nov. 26

The Berkshire Bowl: Housatonic/Wamogo at Gilbert/Northwestern — The action gets started at 10 a.m. and the Mountaineers had better come prepared. The Jackets are solid on both sides of the ball and should have no trouble handling their longtime rival. I see the Jackets scoring early and often on their way to a 37-16 win.

Green Bay at Detroit — Once again the Packers have managed to get back in the wild card race with a victory over the Niners, while the Lions picked up their second win over the Browns. In years past, I seem to remember the Lions pulling off many an upset on T-Day, so why not this year? I’ll take Detroit, 27-24.

Oakland at Dallas — The Raiders pulled off a huge upset against the Bengals, but I can’t imagine them beating the Cowboys in Dallas. I’ll stick with the Cowboys, 24-17, but I’ll be rooting for the Raiders.

N.Y. Giants at Denver — The Giants managed to squeak one out against the Falcons and now must hit the road to play the struggling Broncos. This is another game that the Giants must win if they hope to make the playoffs. I’m not 100 percent behind this pick, but I’ll take the Giants, 23-17.

Sunday, Nov. 29

Miami at Buffalo — The Bills will get better now that head coach Dick Jauron is gone, but it will take time.  The Dolphins are just a fun-to-watch, never-say-die type of team and they still have hopes of making the playoffs. With that said, I like Miami in this game, 20-13.

Arizona at Tennessee — The Cards are playing well, but Kurt Warner is banged up. As for the Titans, Vince Young has won all four of his starts and I think after this week it will be five.  I’ll go with the Titans, 21-17.

Indianapolis at Houston — The Colts continue to win while riding the shoulders of Peyton Manning. The Texans are young and talented and capable of beating anyone. I’m playing a hunch in this one: I think it’s time for the Colts to lose. I’m going with Houston in the upset special, 24-21.

Cleveland at Cincinnati — The Browns lost a heartbreaker against the Lions while the Bengals got caught sleeping in Oakland. You have to like the Bengals, but watch out, anything can happen in this game. I’ll stick with Cincinnati, 27-20.

Carolina at N.Y. Jets — Carolina is one of the most unpredictable teams in the league, but they are capable of beating most anyone on a given day. As for the Jets, their defense is respectable but they are struggling big time on offense. As much as I think Carolina can win this game, my gut feeling is that the Jets’ defense will control the game enough to allow them to pick up a win. I like the Jets, 27-23.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta — The Bucs are going nowhere, while the Falcons are still alive in the playoff picture. I’ll make this my Pick of the Week. I like the Falcons, 28-13.

Washington at Philadelphia — I find both of these teams very boring. The Redskins are averaging just over 14 points a game, while the Eagles average better than 25 points per game. The way I see it, that means the Eagles win this game, 25-14.

Seattle at St. Louis — Do you need a win? Well if you do, you have a good chance of getting one if you’re playing the Seahawks at home. The Rams get their first home win of the year, 23-21.

Kansas City at San Diego — The Chiefs pulled off a huge upset over the Steelers, while the Chargers were manhandling the Broncos. No upset in this one. I’ll take the Chargers, 27-13.

Jacksonville at San Francisco — The Jags are still in the playoff hunt, while the Niners are just about out of it. I’m still pulling for Mike Singletary and the Niners, so I’ll take them, 20-17.

Chicago at Minnesota — There’s really not much you can say about this game except that the Vikings are hot and the Bears are not.  I’ll continue to ride the Vikings until the playoffs, and then we’ll see just how good they are. I’ll take Minnesota, 33-17.

Pittsburgh at Baltimore — You should all know by now that I despise the Ravens (mainly Ray Lewis) and love the Steelers. With that said, my pick is obvious, but I must admit that without safety Troy Polamalu, the Steeler defense becomes much more vulnerable. In the end, however, I’ll put my stock on Big Ben. I take the Steelers, 28-24.

Monday, Nov. 30

New England at New Orleans — This is the best match-up between the AFC and NFC imaginable at this point in the season. What this game truly amounts to is which quarterback plays the best, Tom Brady or Drew Brees. I think it will be the latter. I’ll go with the Saints, 34-27.

Love is in the atmosphere

Author Anne Lamott

Sam Lamott

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
