Plenty of activities to attend this Saturday

AMENIA — If you haven’t already  noticed, your Saturday may very well be a busy one. There are one, two, three, four, FIVE community events scheduled for Sept. 12. It might be hard to attend every one of them, but check out what’s going on this weekend, and don’t forget to support the local organizations that make back-to-school weekends like this possible!

Indian Rock Schoolhouse

Community Day

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln will be celebrated, along with the 400th anniversary of the exploration of the Hudson River by the Dutch. A barbecue chicken lunch, sponsored by the Amenia Lions Club, will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to the main event is free.

The Harlem Valley Chamber of Commerce will host a pie-baking contest. Slices of all shapes and sizes will be sold afterward. Freshtown has donated a birthday cake for Honest Abe, who is rumored to be making a guest appearance. Raffles, craft booths, old time games for kids and multiple musical acts will keep the party rockin’.

The Indian Rock Schoolhouse is located on Mygatt Road. The event’s organizer, Ann Linden, can be reached at indianrockschool@aol.com.

Wassaic Fire Company

At 12:30 p.m., a local parade will kick off the Wassaic Fire Company and Rescue Squad’s Community Day. The $10 admission will include a chicken barbecue at 3 p.m. and tunes  provided by DJ Hoss from 4 to 11 p.m. There will be arts and crafts, children’s games, face painting, a petting zoo and a bounce tent, as well as games of chance, raffles and door prizes for adults. David Waldron Annual

Poker Run

A poker run, or poker derby, is an event where participants travel a predetermined route, stopping at checkpoints along the way to pick up playing cards. The player with the best hand at the end of the run wins. No opportunities here to bluff, but if you’re feeling lucky, head down early to the Millerton Firehouse at 9 a.m. for check-in. Entrance is $20 per person, and will include breakfast sandwiches and lunch at the Amenia Firehouse on Mechanic Street, where the event will conclude. Enjoy raffles and music, and chow down on hamburgers, hotdogs, soda and water, which will be provided around 1 p.m., when the run concludes.

The contact person for the poker
run is Mary Maillet, who can be reached at 845-373-8497.

Juvenile Diabetes

Research Walkathon

This year the annual walkathon raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International will be held at the Webutuck High School track field. Registration is at 9 a.m., and walking can start at any time. Walkers who exceed $100 in pledges will get a free T-shirt and be entered in a raffle drawing. The event is sponsored by the Amenia Lions Club, and more information can be reached by calling James Devine at 845-373-8255.

Millerton Lions Club’s Chicken Barbecue

The fifth event takes place in Millerton; it’s the Millerton Lions Club’s Chicken Barbecue fundraiser. The first of its kind, it’s replacing the club’s former circus fundraiser, which the group is no longer doing. For more information on the barbecue, turn to page A3.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”
