Police Report

The following information was provided by the Millerton Police Department. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

 Assault arrest

On Thursday (Thanksgiving evening), Nov. 27, at approximately 10 p.m., the Dutchess County 911 Center dispatched Officer Benjamin Doty to David Road in the village of Millerton, for a report of a large fight. Officer Doty arrived shortly after the 911 call and found multiple subjects injured.

Deputy Ryan Griffin from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to assist Doty. The Millerton Rescue Squad and Northern Dutchess Paramedics were dispatched and responded to the scene. The Millerton Rescue Squad transported Sean Keery to Sharon Hospital, where he was treated and released. He received multiple stitches from facial injuries received from an assault and suffered a fractured cheek bone.

Millerton Officers Benjamin Doty and  Ryen Boehme along with Deputy Ryan Griffin responded back to David Road on Friday evening to arrest the suspect named in the assault against Sean Keery. The suspect was 27- year-old Kenneth M. Hotaling of David Road. While officers were waiting for the suspect to exit the residence, he climbed out a rear bedroom window and escaped from officers. Officers attempted to locate and apprehend Hotaling, but were unsuccessful.

Saturday afternoon, Nov. 29, an arrest warrant was signed by the Honorable Town of North East Justice John Crodelle, for Kenneth Hotaling. Millerton Officers Benjamin Doty and David Rudin along with New York State Trooper Matt Landon responded to David Road to arrest Hotaling. He was located at his residence and was placed in custody without incident. Millerton Officers brought Hotaling before Judge Crodelle at the North East Town Court, and he was arraigned on the charge of assault in the second degree, a class D felony. He was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on $2,500 bail, and the case was adjourned until Monday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. for further proceedings.

Officer Doty learned from his investigation that after the alleged assault of Keery, several other subjects engaged in fights with each other outside the residence where the initial fight took place. No other arrests are expected to be made at this time. Doty will be filing an additional charge of resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor, against Hotaling for fleeing from the initial arrest attempt Friday evening.

Congregation Beth David in Amenia hosted a conversation on the enduring legacy of Anne Frank, one of the 20th century’s most iconic figures. Ruth Franklin, award-winning biographer and critic, shared insights from her highly acclaimed book “The Many Lives of Anne Frank” with thought-provoking questions from Ileene Smith, Editorial Director of the Jewish Lives series. This event, held on July 23 — the date Anne Frank would have turned 96 — invited the large audience to reconsider Anne Frank not just as the young writer of a world-famous diary, but as a cultural symbol shaped by decades of representation and misrepresentation.

Franklin and Smith dove right in; Franklin reading a passage from the book that exemplified her approach to Anne’s life. She described her work as both a biography of Anne Frank and a cultural history of the diary itself, a document that has resonated across the world.

Prokofiev, piano and perfection: Yuja Wang at Tanglewood

Yuja Wang performs with the TMCO and Andris Nelsons.

Sunday, July 20 was sunny and warm. Nic Mayorga, son of American concert pianist, the late Lincoln Mayorga, joined me at Tanglewood to hear Yuja Wang play Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16. I first saw Wang on July 8, 2022, when she filled in for Jean-Yves Thibaudet on the opening night of Tanglewood’s summer season. She virtually blew the shed down with her powerful and dynamic playing of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Nic was my guest last season on July 13, when Wang wowed us with her delicate interpretation of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. We made plans on the spot to return for her next date in Lenox.
